Postdoctoral Research Associate

Cinematic Geographies

University of Liverpool - School of Architecture

FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
(0.5 FTE)
£31,020 - £34,895 pa (pro rata)
You will join a team to undertake research on an AHRC-funded research project. The project is jointly led by Dr François Penz (Principal Investigator), Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge, and Dr Richard Koeck (Co-Investigator), School of Architecture, University of Liverpool. It also includes partners from English Heritage and the University of Edinburgh. You will be based in the Centre for Architecture and the Visual Arts (CAVA), an interdisciplinary research centre situated in the School of Architecture.
The project is to investigate unique mechanisms by which cinema, the moving image and digital tools contribute to new perspectives on cities. Our aim is to contribute to a greater level of understanding and engagement with the built environment by enriching the Survey of London (English Heritage) through the creation of a moving image database for Battersea, comprising fiction, documentary and amateur films, made accessible by means of locative mobile devices in situ at the place where the movies were shot.
You should have a PhD and distinct expertise in the study of film/moving images with a strong interest in cities, architecture and the built environment or vice versa.  You will act as 'filmic cartographer' in the team. We are therefore seeking an applicant who has previously worked with film archives and has experience with the building of film databases (eg Filemaker Pro, Excel). A prior knowledge of geo-referencing tools (e.g. ArcGIS) and information visualisation would be desirable.
Cinematic Geographies is a pilot and speculative project. You will need to manage and co-ordinate activities across a wide-ranging spectrum, including those relating to our academic and public partners. We therefore would welcome candidates who are proactive, have the ability to work independently if required, and keen to bring in their ideas, experience and skills. It should be noted that since the project is based in Battersea, London, we would consider candidates based in London.  The post is available for 13 months, on a 0.5 fte basis.
The post is a 0.5 fte Research position; however a full-time appointment will be considered if you are qualified and wish to do additional teaching within the School.
